Investiture Ceremony 2016

-Aksa Mariam Poulose

(School Captain)

Expect the unexpected

My best friend once told me that Expect the Unexpected and I never thought that this quote is going to dictate my life.

When our student council elections started in 2015, I participated in it because I believed in ‘trying’.

The results were really surprising for me as I was elected as the school captain. For the first few weeks I didn’t know what to feel and frankly speaking I was confused. On 1st may 2015 we had our investiture ceremony and we got our badge and stripes. At that very moment I realized that I have a huge responsibility towards the school and my whole perspective about life changed.

From that day I decided that if I was made the school captain, then I will make sure that I do my duty and responsively with utmost respect.

The journey was not easy as when you hold a position, you are bound to face criticism but all these made me stronger as a person.

I was really fortunate to have a wonderful team. All of my fellow council members were supportive and caring.

The best part of being in this post was that I had some really good conversation with children whom I have never know before. I did realize that we are not police to stop kids. I had some really inspiring talks with kids that changed me a lot.

Also, due to organizing a lot of events, I got the opportunity of interacting with teachers which did improve my personality. Interacting with them gave me a lot of new ideas.

It is really hard for me to describe my journey as the school captain because a lot of unexpected things have happened in the last one year. But I do realize that I have changed a lot. The change is positive as I am much more confident, understanding and responsible now.

I realized that no matter how tough life is; face it as each day makes you better than the previous day. Secondly, when you face criticism, ignore the unwanted and work on the constructive criticism.

Thirdly, when you are leader people look up to you, so inspire others.

Finally, stay close to your roots and stay humble

(Vice Head Girl )

Everyone dreams in their sleep. Dreams are funny, embarrassing or weird. I too, dream about things, mostly which are near-impossible.

Yet, not even in my wildest of dreams had I expected of becoming a Head Girl!

It all started about two months ago, when everyone around me was excited to contest the elections. However, on the other hand I had a tough time deciding whether I should contest the elections. Mostly, because I didn’t trust my capabilities. But, thank god for my seniors and my friends, who gave me motivation and the support because of I decided to contest the elections.

That time, I didn’t realize a simple decision could change my life so much.

So I worked hard and reached the Speech Round. Even though, I had written my speech a month before and had practiced it in front of the mirror innumerable times, walking up to the stage was one frightening experience! But, I calmed down and said everything I had wanted to say for a long time. To my utter bewilderment, everyone liked my speech. The teachers and students seemed to know and recognize me now. It was by far the proudest moment of my life.

Now, only the final hurdle was left. I got the call for the interview after my exams. I thought it would be the most difficult of rounds; however when do you see the interviewers sipping Fresca and smiling to you? With a tinge of nervousness in my heart I gave my best to answer the questions. Little did I know that I will be called again the very next day, this time to hear the results. With sweating hands and heart beating fast,  Koshie ma’am called out “Head Girl is Kavita Shiva”.

That’s when I couldn’t hold back my tears. After years of feeling incompetent and not trusting my capabilities, finally I had managed to prove myself. During all this time, there were so many people who tried to put me down and tried to convince me that I couldn’t make it. There are still people who doubt my capabilities, but I choose to ignore them.

Working hard, being humble and knowing that ‘I can do it’ has lead me to where I’m right now.

And I hope, just like me; you all get what you deserve, because at the end, everyone gets what they deserve.

(Vice Head Boy)

Know Your Leader

The best thing that can ever happen to a student is when he represents his own school and I consider myself the most fortunate since I got the opportunity to be the Vice Head Boy of St Mary’s School.
Everything is special about this great post and everyone wants to achieve it. There might be something special in me due to which I was elected to be the Head Boy because that is what the teachers say. But I am an ordinary boy who is struggling in this competitive world, who has great desires, who wants to achieve something and who wants to be at the top. There is no shortcut to success and neither did I do anything extra or special for this post. I only tried to be the best I could and changed my perspective about the post. The post of Vice Head Boy for me is like the post of Vice Head Servant. The whole council is the servant of the students and I am at the top. I wanted this post to be able to serve everyone and provide each and every one with the chance that they have strived for. I have no greed for power and authority but I have an insatiable thirst for the welfare of the students.
I also am very thankful to my teachers who made me capable and considered me eligible for this auspicious post. My two main mottos are:
NO – Next Opportunity                &           END-Effort Never Dies

This is why I became the Vice Head Boy and this is what I want every student to follow.
