7 Things To Do Before Summers Ends!

                                                    - Nikita batra

Don't have any big vacation plans this summer? Then you know very well from experience, if you are not careful you could end up spending the next two months sleeping till noon and forgetting how to put on your shoes.

So as to not spend time on your comfortable bed, we have sorted 7 things to do before summer ends

1.Read a book.

Curl up with a book and a nice cup of iced tea and crack it open. Knowledge is sexy, rejoice all you bookworms.

2.Make a new recipe. Who doesn't love the smell of something cooking in the oven

3.Go for a picnic.

It seems a bit old fashioned, but picnics can still be a lot of fun. Pack some food in a basket, go find a grassy spot, plop down, and have a meal. Take your friends or family and create invaluable  memories. Just make sure to avoid any ant hills!!

4.Make a bird feeder and wait until someone stops and checks it out (It will probably be a bird.)

5.Unplug and go connect with your real life friends.

Everyone is on the internet these days.Sometime this summer, set your phone down, get away from the computer and experience life without the internet. Catch up and do the things you used to before the internet became a dominant force in our lives. Your brain will thank you, because sometimes you just need to get away from the web.

6.Take group photos in matching outfits. Why? Because you will get the likes (who doesn't want them) on instagram.

7.Send long letters to your friends out of town.

But first, do some of the stuff on the list so you have something to brag about. With the internet becoming the major driving force in our lives, the anxiously-waiting-for-the-letter-to-arrive has almost vanished from our lives. So people out there make sure to write or at least try to write letters to your family and friends out of town.

This is a slight alteration to the popular phrase that we all have come to follow and ponder upon. We have been asked countless times to maintain cleanliness of our bodies. So what really goes on in that wretched mind of ours?? Well, one thing is for sure. Godliness definitely does not occupy any space in our cluttered minds. Take this case in study: A person's room might be completely messed up. It is full of discarded papers, incomplete homework, wrinkled clothes and what not. The person staying in the room might be completely comfortable, but somebody else might scrunch up his/her nose at its mere sight. Our mind is somewhat like this. It is very difficult to achieve a clean mind, if someone resides in a chaotic environment. An environment which the mind finds receptive, food for thought is essential to achieve a perfect mind. It emanates an aura which speaks of true self. A clear mind is a mind which can think clearly and is free of jealousy, hypocrisy and bad intensions, and a mind which is compassionate. Negative thoughts in our mind bring destruction to not only our soul, but all the near and dear ones living. Our mind is something overcomed or overwhelmed with painful thoughts and emotions. This can be dealt with only by someone who possesses a clear mind. A clean and clear mind can think rationally and overcome any hurdle. It should be full of positive thoughts, to give necessary hope. It is true that controlling the mind and its racing thoughts of envy, jealousy and malice may seem akin to 'Mission Impossible'. The answer lies in the continual self analysis. It might seem difficult but while trying to filter thoughts, a clear awareness of the must-follow virtues come automatically, hereby making our minds squeaking clean! The motto clearly should be: "My mind does not control me... I CONTROL IT!” The motto is a beautiful motivator and has snapped people out of many years of depression. Come to think of it, keeping a strict watch on your brain can do you some good. This implies that we have the power to change our feelings. There is absolutely no need to linger on and in the hateful past. Learning to let go is a perceptual war. Actually, it should not be: 'To be or not to be'. It should be: 'To let go or suffer'. Character development can be envisaged only with the timely cleansing of our mind. Character is constituted by our mind and inevitably the result will be yours to see. Your life will flourish and you will win back the respect of human beings. Have a clean mind and experience the monumental change that will brighten your life's outlook.

Stay Calm and Think Good!

Cleanliness of mind is next to Godliness

How Far is Competition Necessary in Regards

to the Learning Progress

                                                                                               - Yashraj Giri

Today, children of 14-15 years of age are suffering from anti-social behaviours, anxieties and depression. Just like adults, children in schools also have their own group and society. There is rising intolerance, competitiveness, usage of malpractices and exclusion in the “adults” society. But as it seems, these have transitioned into the “children’s” society, the schools, as well. Amir Khan rightly said in 3 Idiots that “marks divide” and he hit the nail on the head. Just as caste and religion divide us, marks and academic performances divide us in schools. It affects our choice of friends, our choices of future profession, our behaviour, our lifestyle and more importantly our reputation among peers and this is the blatant truth. What else could we expect in a setting where the motive of teaching us each single word is to finish the syllabus and prepare us for a weekly test? Where minor queries from weaker students are welcomed with hooting and annoyance? So, to find a way out, student’s mug up, rot learn and cheat. This plants the seeds of probable corruption and compromises. We students are labelled as the future of the nation. But by the looks of the future, it looks no better than the present. A healthy competition is necessary because, “competition makes you better”. But it shouldn’t affect the person socially and emotionally. This is a good topic for a heated debate and has been pondered over for years, but the way things have turned into toppers are usually the ones who have friends, but are lonely, mediocre students who are trying. Parental and peer pressure stand as their biggest obstacle, and those who are seen as failures with studies being the sole factor for judgment are all testimonies of the harms of inapt competition.

love and war?

               - Tanishq Gandas

Is all fair in love and war?

‘Love and war are exactly alike, it is lawful and fair to use any method to obtain a desired end’- Don Quixote once quoted . But is all fair in love and war?

That’s a good topic. Let’s pencil it in for this article. Of course pencil is not permanent ,it can be erased, but it's made of carbon atoms that form graphite, which is found naturally in rocks. So technically things written in pencil are written in stone.

In video games, if the bad guys wanted to stop you, why do they attack in such predictable patterns? Wouldn’t their chances be better if they came right at you? There are great names for this logic -'mook chivalry'- it's as if there is an unwritten convention that applies to fictional bad people that respects not reality but the higher purpose of fun and a good story.

But in real life we are not that much different from the mooks. We construct voluntary obstacles even in the ways of honorable goals, like telling a lie instead of the truth and trying to defend ourselves even when we are wrong. But all is not fair in love and war. Torturing your enemies to demoralise them or for fun has been 'might is right' part of war since wars began. But in the second half of the nineteenth century, Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, organised an official code of warfare, now called the Geneva Convention. Today it has agreed to be followed by 196 countries. And since then a lot of the principals have been established, which can even be called the rules of war. Their enforcement is ensured by regional, national and international powers.

And things valued other than immediate victory are also protected. For example, THE ENVIRONMENTAL MODIFICATION CONVENTION prohibits controlling the weather and using it as a weapon. Before this convention that actually happened! During operation POPYE, US air planes ceded clouds over Vietnam, and successfully extended the monsoon season by more than a month, increasing rainfall by 30%, causing floods and landslides on a massive scale.

These rules also protect parties or groups that are just there to help the victims, and culturally important buildings. To attack such targets would be violating the rules of the war. Or to just pretend to be such targets, which is called perfidy. Espionage however, is allowed. These rules depict what we want before the victory at the war zone – that is dignity and respect . Atheletes agree to play fair, to avoid prohibited things. Even avoiding technically safe and otherwise legal things, that would nonetheless give them an unfair advantage. They do this because the spirit of the sport is more important to them than the quickest victory possible. This is called SPORTSMANSHIP.

Likewise a sort of ‘lovesmanship’ exists in US courtrooms. If the most sure fire way to get out the truth is spoiling a bond of love ,SPOUSAL PRIVILEGE says chill! Love is sacred, truth will come second, find another way. This rule is made to honor what we value more than victory.

We can't travel at the speed of light, neither can we cheat on our significant other, but the latter is not a physical limitation of matter. It’s our own judgement.

We did not create the universe, but we did develop judgement, we named ourselves after that ability. HOMOSAPIENS, homo meaning soil, sapien meaning the ability to make wise judgements.

Violating the rules of war is punishable. However, there is no rules of love .We will not be punished with a jail sentence if we do something that will be considered wrong in human judgement, like breaking someone’s heart. It will be a different sort of punishment.

War, it can be said, is a human invention, so it can more or less be calculated. Love however is a human condition. Broken bones you see are the domains of law, but broken hearts are the domains of awe.

                Talk Sense

                                   - Nikita Batra

Someone has rightly said no amount of cash or high end luxuries can determine the largeness of the frame of mind . While we continue to progress , the mentality of most of us is still limited to warding of evil eye.

In addition to many superstitions ,India is also a rich source of taboos and one of the most rampant of these is the impurity attached to menstruation . While it is not right to say that all India is stuck with this taboo, it is safe to say that most of us still feel that carrying sanitary napkins in black polythene is the decent way to go about it .

But first let's answer one thing ,”What is menstruation?” It is the process in  women of discharging blood and other materials from the lining of uterus at regular intervals from puberty to menopause. Well after a marathon session of head scratching we were not able to understand why this process is considered impure or the weird taboos attached to it, like not to go near the kitchen, etc. Not the end, though. One of the many pilgrimage places in India ,what makes Kamakhya (west of Guwhati, Assam) different is that it has no sculpture to worship. There is only Kamakhya yogi or vagina. The ironic part is that menstruating women are not allowed inside the temple! What is more ironic is that people who visit the temple claim it to  be the most auspicious place, but still conversations turn into whispers when we openly talk about menstruation.

  Incredible India??

I am only me, that is all I can be

No more, no less, don't second guess

I love, I laugh, I live and cry

Some days I'm funny, others I'm not

Sometimes I'm in overdrive and can't

stop

I am a loyal and honest friend,

You know I'll be there until the end; I am a daughter, my parents are my greatest gift,

The smiles on their faces always give me a lift

I can be sweet and shy or sassy and bold,

I'm quite a handful, or so I've been told

I'm not perfect, I do have faults,

Like when I get scared I put up high walls

Or I'm not as forgiving, as I'd sometimes like to be,

Because when I hurt, I hurt deeply

My logic is all my own, at times misunderstood,

Because I don't always do things for my own good

I have my facts, like a diamond you see.....

I am only me.
