Soniya Choudhary, was brutually attacked by one of her neighbours in UP Gaziabad on 12th may 2004.
Visited the school to sentisize the student about gender roles in society. She called herself a survivor and not a victim. Down is her interview with the editorial board.

EB : What organization are you running and how does it empower women ?

Ma’am : We are running an organization called the Chhanv  Foundation , we provide them with shelter and medicines  help them get out of depression and develop their skills so that they can earn money for themselves , one such example is of Rupa who is now a successful designer .

EB : Do you think that it’s justifiable for women to get a separate compartment in the metro ?

Ma’am : Well, I don’t think it is right for women to have a separate compartment , I feel that it is highly shameful that women need to be away from men for their safety I feel both men and women should respect echo other so that no one needs a separate compartment .

EB: Do you think the term “ladies first “ is correct?

Ma’am : I completely disagree with this term, I think both men and women should have equal rights women do not need the “ladies first “ drama in their life .

EB :Who gave you the courage to overcome your situation?

Ma’am : I tried to commit suicide once because I could not take the pain , but right then my mom said something that burnt a fire in me and I decided to die only when I do justice to my family , so yes it is my mom who gave me the courage to live .

EB : How did you react to your situation at the beginning?

Ma’am : First I thought that I was the only one who has faced this , I covered my face all the time , told people that I met with an accident, but then I realized that I did nothing wrong and I should not be ashamed of anything , and later I got to know that there are more girls who have gone through the same

EB : How has the society reacted to your situation?

Ma’am : In the beginning people used to get away from me whisper amongst each other after seeing me, ignore me pretend I never existed ,but now they come up to me ,talk to me ask me questions which makes me really happy as I get to interact with people and tell them about my life.

EB : Why have the acid attacks increased in India, all of a sudden?

Ma’am : This is a very wrong notion that we all have, acid attacks happened 10 years ago as well ,but people at that time never spoke about it, they worried that their image will be spoiled in the society there were no laws protecting people against acid attacks because no one ever filed a complaint, but now they have realized who is at fault and who is not .
